Faculty Profile

Chaojie Chen (陈朝杰) is a Professor and Master’s Supervisor at Guangdong University of Technology. He holds a PhD in Engineering in the field of Industrial Design and Creative Products. He was a state-sponsored Visiting Professor at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, Finland, from 2023 to 2024. He currently serves as an expert reviewer in the Ministry of Education’s national expert pool for the sampling review of postgraduate theses and undergraduate graduation theses/projects in design. He is a committee member of the Computer-Aided Industrial Design Professional Committee of the China Graphics Society, a standing committee member of the Packaging Education Professional Committee of the China Packaging Federation, an expert member of the Service Design Talent and Institutional Evaluation Committee of the Beijing Guanghua Design Development Foundation, a council member of the Science and Technology Design Branch of the China Industrial Design Association, and a council member of the Industrial Design Branch of the Guangdong Mechanical Engineering Society. He previously served as Head of the Department of Industrial Design, School of Art and Design, Guangdong University of Technology, and Deputy Secretary-General of the Industrial Design Branch of the Guangdong Mechanical Engineering Society.

His research focuses on design policy and strategy, sustainable design, and integrated innovation. His research outputs have been reprinted or featured by national-level media, including Chinese Social Sciences Net, China Culture Daily, and China Fashion News. He was listed among the “2024 CNKI Highly Cited Scholars Top 5%” in the field of design studies. He is currently leading the National Social Science Fund of China later-stage funded general project in art studies, Sustainable Design Empowerment and Transformation from the Perspective of Ecological Civilization (2025–present). He previously led the National Social Science Fund of China general project in art studies, A Study of Design Policy in China and the European Union (2019–2023, completed with a “Good” evaluation), and the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Young Scholars Project, Design Policy-Driven Economic Transformation: Inspirations and Lessons from Finland (2015–2018, completed with inspection exemption). He has also participated in four national- and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, including a major consulting project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

He has published five professional monographs and national-level textbooks, including two sole-authored works and three books as chief editor, deputy editor-in-chief, or contributing author. His English-language monograph, The Design Policy Nexus in Finland and China: Innovation, Sustainability, and Global Challenges, is scheduled to be published by Routledge, a UK-based international academic publisher and an imprint of Taylor & Francis Group, on July 16, 2026, and is included in the Routledge Research in Social Design series. His Chinese monograph Design Policy: Design Drives National Development was selected for China’s National Key Book Publishing Project of the 13th Five-Year Plan and received the Second Prize of the 10th Guangdong Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award. He has published more than 20 papers indexed by SCI, EI, and Chinese core journals or above, and has been granted more than 20 utility model patents and design patents. He and his supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students have received more than 20 major international and domestic design awards, including three iF DESIGN TALENT AWARD distinctions.
