Dr. Luan Hemi, Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering in Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT). The broad goal of his research is to Develop Innovative Analytical Methods and Instrumentation, measure and track chemical molecules inside and outside the human body for understanding their impact on human health and disease.
Here you can read more about the three main research topics we have at the moment:
Mass spectrometry
Based on advanced mass spectrometry (MS) and machine learning/artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, this research area is dedicated to the development of new mass spectrometry methods and techniques with high throughput, high accuracy and high sensitivity to achieve structural resolution and content measurements of molecules such as environmental pollutants, metabolites, lipids, proteins, and other molecules, both known and unknown, in the environment and living organisms.
Current research focuses on the development of new methods for the spatial distribution of chemical molecules in biological tissues, combining advanced mass spectrometry and imaging techniques to visually resolve the spatial location and dynamics of chemical molecules in biological tissues and cells.
Bioinformatics and quantitative biology, spatial/single-cell multi-omics, multimodal biomolecular imaging
Mechanisms and interventions of aging, tumor and related diseases
Integrating AI/ML and MS-based data from metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics, we would like to analyze and model complex multidimensional data, such as medical record, environmental exposure, and biological data, etc., to understand the complex biological processes of health and disease. Discovery of active small molecule metabolites/drugs/environmental contaminants and their applications in human health/disease, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, Cancer.
Endo- and exogenous molecules, metabolic transformation and health risks
This research direction is dedicated to quantifying the metabolic fluxes and response mechanisms of metabolic molecular networks in biological cells exposed to external environmental factors, and realizing rational design and precise regulation of cellular metabolic processes, with a view to applying them to the fields of human health and biomedical engineering.
