Chaojie Chen (陈朝杰) is a Professor at the School of Art and Design, Guangdong University of Technology (China). He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering (Industrial Design and Creative Product Design) and supervises master’s students. Funded by the China Scholarship Council, he has also served as a Visiting Professor at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Aalto University (Finland).
Professor Chen is an expert reviewer for the Ministry of Education’s national quality audits of undergraduate and graduate theses in design. He serves in professional organizations including the China Society for Graphic Science (Computer-Aided Industrial Design Committee), the China Packaging Federation (Packaging Education Committee, Standing Member), the Beijing Guanghua Design Development Foundation (Service Design Talent and Organization Evaluation Committee, Expert Member), the China Industrial Design Association (Science & Technology Design Branch, Council Member), and the Guangdong Society of Mechanical Engineering (Industrial Design Division, Council Member). He previously served as Head of the Department of Industrial Design at Guangdong University of Technology, and as Deputy Secretary-General of the Industrial Design Division of the Guangdong Society of Mechanical Engineering.
His research focuses on design policy and strategy, sustainable design, and integrated innovation. His work has been featured and reprinted by national media outlets, including the Chinese Social Sciences Net, China Culture Daily, and China Garment. He was listed in the 2024 CNKI Top 5% Highly Cited Scholars (Design Studies). He is currently leading a National Social Science Fund of China post-funded general project (Art Studies), Sustainable Design Empowerment and Transformation from the Perspective of Ecological Civilization (2025–present). He also led a general project funded by the National Social Science Fund of China (Art Studies), Design Policies of China and the European Union (2019–2023; completed with a “Good” evaluation), and a Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Youth Fund project (2015–2018; completed with exemption from final review). He has participated in additional national and provincial research and consulting projects, including a major consultancy project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Professor Chen has published five scholarly books and nationally published textbooks (two as sole/first author). His monograph Design Policy: Design-Driven National Development was selected for China’s 13th Five-Year National Key Publication Plan and received the Second Prize of the 10th Guangdong Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards. He has authored 20+ peer-reviewed articles (including SCI/EI-indexed papers and leading Chinese journals), holds 20+ granted patents (utility model and design patents), and—together with his undergraduate and graduate students—has won 20+ major international and national design awards.
